The area

Potrero, Penca, and the road in.

The road. Monkey Trail is the local name for the paved route running inland from Sardinal across to Potrero, cutting through the hills rather than tracking the coast. The community’s entrance sits on it. That is why the beach is six minutes away instead of half an hour, and why the drive to Liberia does not double back on itself.

Playa Penca. Six minutes down the hill. Penca is a small protected cove with calm water — a beach for swimming and paddling rather than surf. It sits beside Playa Prieta, and both stay quieter than the better-known beaches further south.

Potrero. Ten minutes. This is the working town of the stretch: groceries, restaurants, hardware, medical services, the everyday errands. It is where you go for ordinary life rather than for a day out, which matters more when you live somewhere than when you visit.

Flamingo and the marina. Fifteen minutes to Marina Flamingo — slips, sportfishing, and the restaurants that gather around a working marina.

Las Catalinas. Ten minutes north, a car-free town built into the hillside with a network of mountain-biking and hiking trails. Worth knowing about whether or not it appeals: it is part of why this corner of Guanacaste draws people who want to be outdoors rather than beside a pool.

Liberia. Daniel Oduber Quirós International (LIR) is about an hour away, and carries direct flights from a range of North American cities. It handled a record 1.9 million passengers in 2024 and completed a runway rehabilitation in early 2025. That access is what makes a home here practical rather than theoretical.

What the location actually buys is a short drive in every direction that matters, and hills quiet enough that you notice it at night.
